The back lighting on the sands often gives strong contrast picking out bold shapes in the ever changing channels. This clear morning gave particularly strong orange sky shortly before the sun rose above the distant hills - the diffused light from the higher deep blue sky giving a wonderful contrast in colour in the foreground.
\r\n
\r\nTechnical notes:
\r\n1\/200 second @ ƒ10 two stop ND grad
\r\n140mm","photographer":"John Leech","width":600,"id":8912447,"height":399,"takendate":"","payment_groups_id":17315,"server_id":32,"link":"photo_8912447.html","src":"dawn_11-11-07_600.jpg","home":0,"purchase_instruction":"","galleries_id":435733,"gallery":0});

This may look like creative photography taken to extreme - but it is actually simple observation. The processing is minimal, the hanging cloud has been darkened, but by the slightest amount, and the foreground water has been darkened a fraction so that the near bank of the curve doesn't distract from the rest of the image. I see it from my bedroom window in a gap between two houses. I originally photographed it using my Sigma 105mm macro, the focal length fit the space perfectly. This variation on the view has two major changes. First, now our daughters are both at college I have access to the upper bedroom windows first thing each morning - this opens up far wider views of the bay. Second, I now have a 200 mm lens which adds further compositional options.
\r\n
\r\nHowever, my time spent photographing the default view proves invaluable when the cloud and rain are touching the water, often the case at this time of year in Grange over Sands. I know exactly there the hills are relative to the foreground houses and trees, so can set the camera up reasonably accurately when the cloud hides the view. Surprisingly, the camera can often record details which simply don't appear to be there. Huge amounts of processing are necessary to bring this out - but the results can often be extraordinary. I love the early colours revealed in this version.
\r\n
\r\nThis is one exposure with no added colour or texture.
\r\n
\r\nTechnical notes:
\r\n1\/4 second @ ƒ14
\r\n200mm ","photographer":"John Leech","width":600,"id":8912702,"height":399,"takendate":"","payment_groups_id":17315,"server_id":32,"link":"photo_8912702.html","src":"wintery_arnside_knot_600.jpg","home":0,"purchase_instruction":"","galleries_id":435733,"gallery":0});

The little telly on the back of my camera barely showed any detail at all, and the histogram is a single spike which I exposed as far to the right as I could. Its an enjoyable way of working and brings back some of the mystery I used to experience in the darkroom, the magical feeling of an image appearing in front of my eyes as the chemicals wash over it.
\r\n
\r\nThe processing of this image is very simple, no imported actions or third party plug-ins or combined secondary images for textures or tones, just straight forward use of curves and layers searching for the mood within.
\r\n
\r\nTechnical notes:
\r\n1\/4 second @ ƒ14
\r\n155mm","photographer":"John Leech","width":599,"id":8912703,"height":400,"takendate":"","payment_groups_id":17315,"server_id":32,"link":"photo_8912703.html","src":"wintery_bay_600.jpg","home":0,"purchase_instruction":"","galleries_id":435733,"gallery":0});
